A really good Voice Training program will change the course of your personal history. By stirring the power of your breath and voice into life, you will be remembered as magnetic, authoritative, charismatic and full of presence. Think for a moment of all those people who are indelibly placed in your memory, and you will remember the unique characteristic of their voice. Benjamin Disraeli once said: “There is no index of character so sure as a person’s voice!” There are the voices of noble stature, and those of a high-pitched squeak – which one do you wish to listen to? Voice Training is sensual and sensory experience, and rather like a physical work out at the gym, on this occasion the gym is your interior.
The qualities of a great leader, such as Barack Obama, appear in their physique and vocal delivery, just as they do in their policies, strategies and personal attitudes towards the people around them, the human capital. So here are a few Vocal tips I would give to our future leaders of today. They are all taken from the leading edge skills explored in my specific Voice Training experiences. Derived from a career spanning thirty years of working with great Actors, Politicians, CEO’s and States-people, and so I now have a sixth sense about this expertise:
VOICE TRAINING EXERCISES – seven steps to powerful freedom:
- Find somewhere quiet where you can be reflective, just for a few moments and switch off your Blackberry.
- Stand or sit in a position where you can feel your body weight balanced. Try not to slouch, but feel your spine long, your back wide, and the chest broad, but without pushing your shoulders back.
- Lift your shoulders and rotate them a couple of times. Also, rotate your head on its axis once or twice in both directions without crunching your neck, and sigh AH through an open throat three times; these measures help to release the ever-present muscular tension that traps energy and creates tension in the upper body, neck and shoulders.
- Breathe in deeply, feeling the breath widen your ribs and drop into your abdomen, and HUM out several times – the more you do this the better it feels.
- Rotate your jaw, in the way you would chew food, openly and easily, and then just massage the length of the jaw with the heels of your palms six times, from your cheek to the chin. Then sigh out AH.
- Then squeeze the back of your tongue up against the roof of your mouth. Keeping the tip of your tongue lightly against the lower teeth, and sound tightly GE, GE, GE, GE – you will feel your sound tense and metallic trapped in your head.
- Then breathe in three times in the same way as before, and say freely GE, GE, GE, GE. You will notice the whole of your voice fully through your body. This will give you great confidence, and you’ll be surprised.
